Mustain or no Mustain?... Is That the Real Question?

As most of you who follow Razorback Football are well aware, the nation's #1 quarterback prospect, Mitch Mustain, verbally committed to the Hogs before his high school season began and then decided to "reopen" his recruitment process once his high school season had ended. Springdale High School completed what many would call a 'dream season' going 14-0 and winning the State Championship in Arkansas' highest classification, the AAAAA. Not only did they complete an undefeated season but they did so with dominance. In Arkansas football there is a 'mercy rule' which goes into effect if at any time in the second half a team is ahead by 35 or more points. The clock continues to run as long as one team is 35 points or more ahead of the other. This includes incomplete passes, out of bounds, etc.. The mercy rule was put into effect to keep teams from totally humiliating their opponent. Springdale invoked the mercy rule on every team they played with exception to West Memphis in the championship game, which they 'only' won by 34 points!

What made this team so dominant you ask? Well I have a couple of ideas.

Mitch Mustain: This cool QB can make all the throws. The quick out on a rope, the pass across the middle with pinpoint accuracy, and of course the deep ball with plenty of air under it. He is a leader in the huddle. He has great timing with his receivers. I could go on and on and on.

Damian Williams: This receiver has great hands and lightning speed. He was spectacular on the defensive side of the ball too. In the 3 or 4 games I went to see at Springdale this season he laid out more than one would be receivers with bone crushing blows. Too bad he is committed to Florida, but only verbally.

Andrew Norman: Andrew is another great receiver who caught several long balls from Mitch and he IS committed to Arkansas!!

Bartley Webb: Another D1 recruit, Bartley is committed to Notre Dame.

Ben Cleveland: Ben is a heck of a tight end and also got it done on the defensive side of the ball. Like Williams, he is verbally committed to Florida.

Well, that rounds out the 'Springdale 5' but the 6th and sometime forgotten star of this dominant team is (former) Head Coach Gus Malzahn.
Gus is the brains behind this stellar team. After taking over for the much heralded Gerald Williams, Gus took this team to another level. He brought his patented spread offense from then class AA Shiloh Christian School to the state's highest classification. His offense has become so successful he has published a book and an instructional DVD.
Now Malzahn has become the offensive Coordinator for the Hogs and his number one job is to continue the recruitment of the Springdale 5. Norman is still a solid commitment but Mustain is "keeping his options open". Williams is still leaning heavily toward Florida as is Cleveland but, with a little luck, that could change come signing day.

The way I see it:
As long as we have the 'cookie cutter' in Malzahn we can make as many 'cookies' as we need. Sure you would like to have the nation's #1 QB come to your school, but if we don't get him it's not the end of the world. Arkansas already has a pretty good group of quarterbacks in Casey Dick, Alex Mortensen, and Robert Johnson. In this new offense Malzahn can make them very good quarterbacks. This also opens the door for H.S. Senior to be, Kody Burns for the 2007 Class.

Keep your heads up Razorback Fans, Believe it or not WE ARE JUST ABOUT TO TURN THE CORNER.

To keep it all in perspective:
Don't let the decisions of 17,18,19 year old kids determine your disposition, mood, or even your life.

This holiday season remember that Jesus it the Reason for the Season!

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
